In Memory

Joyce Winter (Galloway)

Joyce Winter (Galloway)

This post just shows us that we are not promised tomorrow. Joyce "Joy" Winter Gallaway passed away on April 18 from a massive heart attack.  She had just attended the HHS 60s Combined Reunion Saturday night and I was fortunate enough to have had a nice conversation with her.  She had not been to one of our reunions since the 10 year reunion in 1975. We talked about our date to the Lakeside Elemetary School 5th grade dance and that they had taught me how to dance, I told her they didn't do a very good job.   He had some good laughs.  Kep her family in your thoughs and prayers.  I will post obituary when it becomes available.

Sorry to hear of her death. She was a great worker for my dad. She often texted me to keep up. I will miss her.

It's always a shock to see somebody one day (at the reunion Saturday) and then learn of their passing almost immediately after.  We sure are not promised tomorrow.  Prayers and sympathy to Joyce's family and many friends!  Very sad indeed, RIP!

Very sad news. This is one of the main reasons that the Decade Reunions are such a good idea. At our age getting together annually gives us more opportunities to meet and share fond memories of the good old days, as well as sharing updates on our families and what gives us joy today. The laughs that Joy shared about the fifth grade dance will be treasured memories. There are a thousand memories that we can share with one another that will bring smiles to our faces. Not sure about others but every time I have a conversation about old times with friends, it makes me want to do it more often. I was unable to attend this year's event, but this reminds me to get my priorities straight and to take advantage of opportunities to get together with old friends.

Condolences to Joy's family and friends.

GALLOWAY, Joyce Winter, Joyce Winter Galloway “Joy,” devoted mother, aunt, sister, and the best Mema and Momma Joy, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 18th, four days short of her 76th birthday. Her family surrounded Joy and was at peace knowing she would join her husband (Francis Dale Galloway), who preceded her in death 13 years ago. Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Rosemary and Joe Winter; three sisters, Mary Kathleen Winter, Anne Flagg, and Irene Kelleher; and one brother, Steve Winter.

Joy is survived by her children, Rosemary Galloway Morris and Kathy Galloway (J.D.) three granddaughters, Kaitlyn AnnMarie Reynolds (Dylan), Robyn Ashley Morris (Nicholas), and Isabella Rose Selberis. She is also survived by her sisters, Rosemary Witt and Patricia Hargrove, and two brothers, J.B. Winter and Kenny Winter.

Joy’s greatest love was her three granddaughters – Kaitlyn, Robyn, and Izzy. She was proud of each of them and would tell anyone that would listen. Joy said goodbye to her “girls,” encouraging them, and expressing her love.

Joy leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews whom all looked forward to coming to her house for Thanksgiving. She had a special relationship with each of them. Joy enjoyed having time with her son-in-law, JD. She would make him his favorite turkey breast whenever he asked. She was always there for her entire family, from cooking a chocolate pie for some to opening her home to others.

Joy loved her family. She was the person you called when you needed help. She was the one to take care of the details. None more evident when Joy planned and executed the annual Kid’s Christmas Party. The kids threw whipped cream pies into Uncle Frank’s face while she made sure there were cookies to decorate and enough love for all. And just to be clear, she cleaned up everything too.

For those that knew her as Momma Joy. She loved you no less fiercely than her own. She cherished the time she had making the best memories of our lives, especially at the river. To have the river and the lifelong friendships that came from it was a gift.

Later in life Joy and Frank found their happy place at Sunset Pointe Marine in Urbanna, VA. There was no mistake the peace and happiness found there. Joy made lifelong friends with others at the marina, but Lynda and Tom Woodward held a special place in her heart. Joy would refer to the time she spent with Lynda as being with your best friend for a sleepover.

Joy had a love for music and singing. She was a choir member at St. Peter’s Catholic Church and sang with other choirs over the years. Joy was known to offer comfort at difficult times by singing the Ave Maria to the heavens when emotions made it hard to even speak.

Over the past few years, she battled Myasthenia gravis. An autoimmune disease that made her muscles weak and tired. She pushed through even on the days she felt her worst. There is no cure for Myasthenia gravis. Because Joy worked in medical research for years, she unselfishly donated her body to science hoping she could help find a cure for the now incurable disease--- another example of how she was always giving of herself, even in the time of her death.

She was strong, loving, independent, and fierce. She was the rock for many who depended on her love and joy. The word joy is defined as feelings of intense, long-lasting happiness. Joy was the perfect name for this incredible woman.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Peters at a later date. Feel free to contact the family for details.

In lieu of flowers, she would be honored by donations toward autoimmune disease research.
